9 Killed, 16 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) -- At least 25 people were shot across the city over the weekend, leaving nine of them dead, according to police.
The latest homicide happened Sunday night in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 9 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Karlov found a 17-year-old boy unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Chicago Police.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office has not released his name.
Sunday afternoon, a 35-year-old man was shot to death in the West Side Austin neighborhood.
Officers found Willie Jones dead in an alley with gunshot wounds to the head and back at 2:33 p.m. after a call of shots fired in the first block of North Lorel, authorities said. Jones lived in the 5500 block of West Jackson.
Another fatal shooting occurred in the same neighborhood about 7:15 a.m. A 35-year-old man was found dead inside a car with a single gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. His name has not been released.
Two hours earlier, a 23-year-old man was killed in a Little Village drive-by shooting.
Marco Mendez was riding in a vehicle near his home in the 2500 block of South Whipple when someone in a black SUV shot him in the face. The driver took him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m., authorities said. Investigators think the shooting was gang-related, police said.
Less than an hour earlier, two people were found shot to death on the Kennedy Expressway on the Northwest Side, according to Illinois State Police.
Crews responded about to the shooting about 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Armitage, where a Chevrolet Tahoe was stopped in the middle of traffic with two Waukegan residents dead inside, state police said.
The 43-year-old driver, Eric L. Taylor; and 36-year-old passenger, Camille C. Cooley each suffered head wounds, police said. A handgun was found near the driver, but police have not identified a shooter.
Saturday afternoon, two men were fatally shot in separate attacks that occurred within minutes of each other in Austin.
Kevin Milton, 32, was in the driver seat of a car about 3:45 p.m. in the 800 block of North Waller when someone walked up and shot him in the chest, authorities said.
He showed up at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was pronounced dead at 4:14 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 800 block of North Parkside.
About the same time, 20-year-old Albert Hurd was outside in the 5300 block of West Harrison when a dark-colored vehicle drove up and someone inside shot him in the chest, arm and abdomen, authorities said.
Hurd was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 5200 block of West Congress.
The weekend's first homicide happened late Friday in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.
Two 21-year-old men were standing on a sidewalk in the 1200 block of West Grenshaw about 11:45 p.m. when someone in a dark-colored van fired shots, police said. One man was shot in the chest and abdomen, and the other in the arm.
Friends drove them to Stroger Hospital, where the man with the chest wound was pronounced dead, police said. Authorities have not released his name. The other man's condition was stabilized.
The latest nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. A man showed up at Holy Cross Hospital with a graze wound to the back after the attack in the 4900 block of South Throop, but he wasn't cooperating with investigators, police said. He was in good condition.
At least 14 more people were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and the early hours of Monday.
