Waukegan Teachers Strike Enters Second Day
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- Schools are closed for a second day in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan as a teachers' strike continues.
Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 said in a message on its website that there would be no classes on Friday. Teachers went on strike Thursday morning after the district and the Lake County Federation of Teachers failed to come to terms on a contract. A union official said teachers were back on picket lines Friday morning.
The two sides are at odds over salary, health care benefits and employee conditions. The strike is keeping about 17,000 students out of classrooms.
School district attorney Tony Ficarelli said the teachers union only wanted to talk about salary. The teachers contend their pay isn't comparable to similar nearby districts.
