Waukegan Dad Charged With Breaking Baby's Leg
WAUKEGAN (CBS) -- A Waukegan man has been charged with aggravated battery for allegedly breaking his infant son's leg.
Chris Sandifer, 31, was indicted for aggravated battery to a child and aggravated domestic battery by a Lake County grand jury, aurhorities said
In December, Sandifer and his wife brought the baby to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment. The baby's left tibia and fiia had been broken, according to Waukegan Police Cmdr. Gabe Guzman.
The hospital called police and Sandifer allegedly first told officers that he fell asleep and rolled over the baby, Guzman said. Then he told police that the baby fell.
Later, Sandifer told police that his son kept crying while he tried to change his diaper.
"He twisted and jerked (the baby's) left leg and he heard it snap," Guzman said.
Sandifer's wife has custody of the baby, according to court documents.
If convicted, Sandifer faces up to 30 years in prison on the aggravated battery charge and up to seven years in prison on the aggravated domestic battery charge.
Sandifer remained in custody Friday at Lake County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. His arraignment hearing is scheduled Feb. 3.
