Waukegan Alderman Cracks Down On Graffiti Stickers

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (CBS) -- A Waukegan alderman is declaring war on a new form of graffiti to infest his community.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, the graffiti is defacing stickers. Waukegan Ald. Harold Beadling (4th), says taggers are marking up postal stickers, usually, and then street signs, traffic poles, phone equipment boxes and other outdoor surfaces.

"The stick them all over the place, and they get them all at the Post Office," he said.

Ald. Beadling has spent more than 33 hours in the last three weeks scraping off the graffiti stickers. Sometimes, he says, he has to use a heat gun to soften the stickers' glue.

"They all say 'Express Mail' or 'Priority Mail' on them, except for, I'll run into an occasional, 'Hello, my name is" sticker, he said.

Beadling says the culprits are hard to catch.

"They look around, nobody's coming, bam! It's on the sign and they're gone," he said.

Beadling estimates he has removed about 100 graffiti-covered stickers so far.
