Water Main Break Floods Street On South Side
Updated 12/7/12 - 11:07 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A large water main break on the South Side forced city crews to scramble to stop the leak on Friday.
The city's water department says a 36-inch main water feeder main broke in a residential area in the 9500 block of South Racine. The main ruptured as crews were working on a gutter box just below the road surface.
Images emailed to CBS 2 showed the street was quickly flooded, as water gushed from the broken main, and began seeping up onto residential sidewalks.
The water department was able to turn off the water by around 10 a.m., and the water quickly receded.
The city says it has not received any reports of water in homes. Water service was not affected.
The 9500 block of South Racine remained closed to traffic, however, and likely would remain shut down for most of the day, until crews can perform repairs on the broken main.
