Watch: Yoenis Cespedes Guns Down Runner From 300+ Feet
(CBS) Major League Baseball has a clubhouse leader for the season's best outfield assist and perhaps the defensive play of the year.
In other words, Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes finally was presented with a perfect set of circumstances to show off his cannon arm.
With the Athletics tied 1-1 against the Angels in the eighth inning last night, Mike Trout roped a ball down the left-field line with Howie Kendrick on first base. As Cespedes went to field it on a hop, it deflected off his glove and toward the padded wall, and Kendrick got the sign to make a dash for home.
For Cespedes, this was of little worry. It just gave him the opening to gun down Kendrick at the plate from 300-plus feet on the fly. It couldn't have been any more of an accurate throw, and his arm strength is rivaled by few in baseball.
Amazing.
