(CBS) There is great honor in battling at the plate, in fouling off tough pitches and staying alive.
It drives up the pitch count, tiring an opposing hurler. It gives you a better feel at the plate. It gives your teammates a better feel for what they might see.
There can be downsides of fouling off pitches, though, as Twins shortstop Eduardo Escobar found out last night in a game against the Blue Jays.
Battling knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on an 0-2 count, Escobar fought off a low pitch, only to have it bounce back up and hit him in the junk.
