Watch: David Ross' Pickoff At 1st Bails Cubs Out Of Trouble, Seals Win
(CBS) The Cubs are fond of praising backup catcher David Ross' leadership abilities and contributions, even if they don't show up notably in the box score.
Thursday night showed why.
With Chicago leading 2-1 with runners and first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth at Washington, Ross bailed closer Hector Rondon out of trouble when he picked Clint Robinson off first base with a dart of throw behind the runner to Anthony Rizzo. It was a perfectly timed decision and came at a time after the count had just run to 3-1 on the dangerous Anthony Rendon.
From the sounds of it, Rizzo called for the play.
"He was giving like, 'Look at me,'" Ross told the Tribune. "He gave me our pick signal."
The Cubs improved to 28-24 with the win
