Washington Park mass shooting: 18-year-old dead, 3 people injured
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was killed, and three others were hurt late Sunday when gunfire erupted in Washington Park.
Police said just before 8:20 p.m., someone shot four people during a quarrel in the 5700 block of South Payne Drive – toward the east end of the park just west of Cottage Grove Avenue and the University of Chicago Medical Center.
CBS 2's Tara Molina caught up Monday with the mother of the young man who was killed in the shooting – identified by family as 18-year-old Tyshon Johnson. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has not officially released the teen's identification.
Johnson's mom said he left behind brothers and sisters and was excited for his senior year of high school.
Police were alerted of almost 28 rounds when the mass shooting happened in the picturesque South Side park. Police said the shooting occurred following a quarrel "among several women" – and the shooter got away.
Another 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were injured in the shooting – struck in the leg and in the leg and torso, respectively. Both were reported in fair condition.
A 52-year-old man was shot once in the face and chest and was reported in critical condition.
Johnson was in the thigh and buttocks. All the victims were rushed to the nearby UChicago Medical Center, where Johnson was pronounced dead.
Johnson's mother, Yolanda, supplied CBS 2 with photos of her son, including one showing him with her and his two brothers.
Yolanda also said her son had four sisters.
Yolanda said Johnson loved sports and was getting ready for his senior year. She said she had not learned much about what happened and just got the call her son had been killed.
Representatives of UChicago Medicine did not have updates to share late Monday on the three people injured.
Area One detectives late Monday were still investigating the deadly shooting, and no one was in custody.
