Washington, Ill. Seeking Volunteers To Help Clear Debris
City leaders are looking for volunteers over age 18 who are willing to help clean up unusable appliances and electronics along with chemicals and yard waste from areas hit by the tornado.
Brian Williamsen with the Central Illinois Emergency Information Group, a group of PR professionals from the state, county, education, healthcare and law enforcement agencies, says individual volunteers should call 309.698.5002 to register and groups should call 309.698.5003.
If you can't help this week, he's sure your aide will appreciated next week too.
Volunteers are being asked to arrive early at Illinois Central College to help and to wear appropriate clothing.
As for those who aren't comfortable lifting heavy objects, Williamsen says cleanup organizers are also looking for people to answer phones, do data entry and sort donations.
Meanwhile, Washington won't be sounding its tornado sirens tomorrow as part of the usual monthly test.
Williamsen says city workers have tested the sirens silently to spare residents any added stress.
