Warner: Cutler Needs More Protection
By Adam Hoge--
At least one former quarterback who played under Mike Martz says Jay Cutler needs more protection from his offensive line.
Future Hall-of-Famer Kurt Warner told the Mully & Hanley show Monday that when you don't have protection from your offensive line "you're never going to be as good a quarterback."
It's not like this is breaking news for anyone watching the Bears first six games, but as the Bears continue to avoid the problem -- Lovie Smith said Monday that he is "excited" to see the same offensive line unit out there next week against Washington -- it's refreshing to hear a former Martz quarterback stress the importance of giving Cutler time to throw the football.
"You can watch that around the league with the best players in this league," Warner said. "You hit 'em, you hit 'em often and they become different players because it's hard to play in that kind of situation."
Warner also told Mully and Hanley that he will not come out of retirement to play football again.
"I'm done. A lot went into my decision to retire," he said. "It's not a decision that I made lightly. I'm not a guy who says retirement now just means that you are going to take a few months off and then decide. For me retirement was, you know, this is a final decision. If you say you are going to retire, you are done and you're not looking back."
