Walter's Perspective: Whittier-CPS Standoff
CHICAGO (CBS) - There is something fishy about the Whittier story: stinky fishy, the way the Board of Education is being so hard on the parents at Whittier, so determined to muscle them out of that fieldhouse.
Cutting off the gas and preparing to wipe out the fieldhouse, while refusing even to talk to the parents, or to reporters.
If the fieldhouse is as unsafe as the Board says it is, why aren't the police or firemen being called in to lead the parents out?
Why isn't the CEO of the public schools, Ron Huberman, going to Whittier to explain to the children why he won't fix the fieldhouse and make it into a library, which Whittier doesn't have?
What is it at the Whittier public school, Chief Huberman, tough-guy Huberman, showing the parents who's boss? Is that what it is?
You'd think the CEO of our public schools would be smart enough to know how to deal with disappointed and increasingly angry parents, before Whittier explodes into an embarrassing national story.
If Ron Huberman is not smart enough to do that, what in the world is he doing running the public schools?
