Walter's Perspective: Teacher Contract Dispute Has Become Schoolyard Fight
CHICAGO (CBS) -- I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, I say enough of the Chicago Board of Ed and the teachers' union behaving like nasty, noisy roughnecks, punching each other out on a play lot.
It could be they think that's how to negotiate a contract, screaming at each other. "We care about the children." "Oh, no you don't." "Oh, yes we do." "You don't."
A bunch of brats whining at each other, talking trash and confusing children, upsetting 8th-graders, frightening first-graders. Unreasonable adults teaching children to be unreasonable, setting the worst kind of example, for which they ought to be in dunce caps and standing in a corner.
Luckily, that's not the whole story about public education in Chicago. I know of a teacher, and a principal, who are setting the best kind of example, on our news here at 6 o'clock Friday.
