Walter's Perspective: New Gun Control Debate Is Encouraging
CHICAGO (CBS) -- In the great debate about guns, there are some unexpected things happening in the wake of the horrific shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Wal-Mart, for example, has pulled some guns from its online store. The huge gun seller Dick's Sporting Goods has suspended sales of some automatic rifles.
The White House and Congress have been making promises about guns, talking frankly about the politics of gun control.
State assemblies and 725 mayors across the country are aiming to prohibit the sale of assault weapons.
The National Rifle Association dumped its Twitter and Facebook pages for a few days, and said Tuesday it will help make sure a Sandy Hook never happens again.
The politicians are saying they will not be bought by advocates of any of the arguments, and they are inviting voters to hold their feet to the fire.
For or against gun control, it's the debate that's good; kind of like Neil Armstrong walking on the moon: a small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind.
