Walter's Perspective: Inquiry Into Fire Captain Not So Transparent
CHICAGO (CBS) -- In City Hall in Chicago, there's a mystery now two weeks old and still unsolved about a fireman beating up on a cop during a rescue mission on the Chicago River. A fire captain who's the son of a former fire commissioner.
What happened? Why is the captain being accused by the cop of assault?
Not only are reporters trying to find out, but so is the city Inspector General, who needs to know if there's a crime involved.
Easy enough, right? Just ask the fire department. Nope.
An order's been issued that says, "No correspondence, documents, interviews or other requests from the Inspector General shall be honored unless approved by the fire commissioner," who is appointed by the mayor.
A stonewall, just like in the old days. Not the new days the new Mayor Emanuel talks about, always talking about -- transparency.
So Mr. Mayor, walk the talk. Be transparent.
