Walter's Perspective: Every Day Is Tax Day
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Tuesday in Cook County was tax day, deadline day for property taxes. Every day these days is a tax day.
Every time we turn around we're being hit, or are about to be hit, by a new tax or a new fee to pay; to park a car, or buy a sticker, or play pool or poker, or to take a shower, smoke a cigarette, drink a beer, listen to a juke box, get a haircut, take a taxi or stay in a hotel.
New taxes and fees on the books, or being proposed by our elected officials, who when running for office told us no new taxes. They lied to us is what they did.
The governor, the mayor, the president of the Cook Country Board – they promised no new taxes and got elected and are now imposing new taxes as quickly as they can, hoping we'll forget by time they run again, telling us again they do not want to nickel and dime us to death.
It's not true they don't want to nickel and dime us. If it were true, they'd stop doing it.
