Walter's Perspective: Bears, Be Cautious About Cutler's Return
Thursday night is begin-to-worry night. For me, it's worry, worry about the Bears.
But this Thursday, it's not the Bears, it's Jay Cutler I'm worried about. Not about him being too dizzy to play Sunday, but that he'll be allowed to play, perhaps even told to play the following Sunday.
Jay Cutler will prance in practice next week and say he's OK, even if he's not. So I say to the Bears: Don't listen to what Jay says, not until you are certain, without a doubt certain, he's OK.
Consider the doctors who say that damage to a brain caused by concussion often does not show up until long after it happens.
Jay Cutler is just 27 years old. He has a long time to live. Help him live it. And while you're at it, set a new standard for the NFL: No player in Cutler's condition on the football field.
If you don't like your backup quarterback, go get a better one, which is what you oughta be doing instead of looking for Jay to come back.
A player's health and safety, says Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo, "have been and always will be a priority."
That, Mr. Angelo, is very good talk. Now walk it.
