Walgreens To Add 500 New Corporate Jobs
DEERFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- Walgreens confirmed Friday that it will be adding 500 corporate jobs in Illinois in the coming three years.
The Deerfield-based Walgreen Co. confirmed a report that the new jobs will be focused on the drugstore giant's growing online business, as well as its health and medical services.
The jobs will do not include additional store-level positions that will be added in addition, Walgreens said.
Walgreens currently has 5,000 employees at its Deerfield corporate headquarters and surrounding offices.
The news comes as Walgreens continues with plans to expand its presence with more new, large-scale stores. One such store opened at 151 N. State St. in January, occupying 22,000 square feet on two levels. It features amenities such as a sushi bar, a station for fruit juice shakes, and a barista bar for coffee; along with a beer, wine and spirits section featuring tastings.
A large-scale Walgreens is also planned for a storefront space in the Tribune Tower.
The approximately 25,000 square-foot location will have a bridge pharmacy with a pharmacist at a front desk, as well as a Take Care medical clinic, among other features. It is set to open in the summer of next year.
Signs are also up for a two-story Walgreens that will be coming to the old Borders at 2817 N. Clark St., in the East Lakeview neighborhood. Renderings from the architectural firm Hirsch Associates LLC showed plans for two-story "Wellness Experience" store at the site with more space and features than a typical Walgreens store.
