Man Found 'Unresponsive' After Being Shot Outside W Hotel In Streeterville
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was found unresponsive after he was shot multiple times outside the W Hotel in the Streeterville neighborhood.
Chicago Police say the victim was "unresponsive" when officers arrived just after 4 a.m. on Sunday. CBS 2 crews saw officers canvassing the area around the hotel, which is near inner Lake Shore Drive and Ontario Street. Glass on a door was shattered, possibly by gunfire.
Police say no one was in custody Sunday afternoon, and witnesses at the scene did not cooperate.
W Hotel parent company Marriott released the following statement after the shooting: "We are aware of a situation that was reported today. The safety and security of our guests and employees is always a top priority. Because this matter is under police investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further."
As of Sunday evening, about 50 people had been shot in Chicago this weekend, and two had been killed – considerably fewer than have been seen on other recent weekends.
The first fatal incident happened at 1:52 a.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of East 78th Street in South Shore. Two women were in the rear parking area of an apartment complex when someone fired shots, and one of them, 19, was pronounced dead soon afterward at the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head. The other woman, 39, was also taken to the U of C in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.
In the second fatal incident, a 37-year-old man was on the sidewalk on a bicycle at 1:29 p.m. Sunday, in the 4000 block of West Carroll Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He heard gunshots and felt pain, and was soon afterward pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital with shots to the chest and neck.
A 13-year-old girl was wounded in a shooting at 2:11 p.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of West Harrison Street in North Lawndale. She was standing in the alley when she heard gunshots and felt pain, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the right leg.
A rideshare driver was also among the gunshot victims this weekend. The 50-year-old man was driving on 30th Street near Pulaski Road in Little Village at 2:49 a.m. Sunday when he heard several men yelling and heard multiple gunshots, and immediately felt pain. He was shot once in the left leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
Meanwhile, in addition to the Streeterville incident, there have been two other shootings in and around the downtown area this weekend.
Around 5 a.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man was in the back seat of a car near Wabash Avenue in Wacker Drive when the occupants got into a quarrel with a man on the street. That man shot in to the car and struck the man three times in the back, and he was taken by his friends to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was reported in serious condition. There was a fatal shooting at the same site last weekend.
Around 1:36 a.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old man was in a vehicle in the 300 block of North Columbus Drive when a black sedan pulled up and the victim heard multiple gunshots and felt pain. The victim drove to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was in good condition with a gunshot wound to the upper back. A person of interest was apprehended for questioning, and a gun was recovered.
