Visually Impaired Man Dies After Being Hit By Pace Bus
OAK PARK, Ill. (STMW) -- A visually impaired man was killed after being run over by a Pace bus near west suburban Oak Park on Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened about 12:15 p.m. near Madison Street and Harlem Avenue in Oak Park, according to Oak Park Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Mark Wilson. The victim, believed to be in his 60s, had both of his legs run over by the bus, he said.
He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with very critical injuries, but died just after arriving at the hospital, Wilson said.
Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot said the accident involved a westbound No. 318/North Avenue bus.
The man was hit by the rear of the bus. It's unclear whether the bus was turning or whether the man was standing or crossing the street, he said.
The bus driver was also taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation after suffering anxiety, Wilson said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the fatality but could not provide any further details Thursday afternoon.
Oak Park police are investigating but could not be reached for comment.
