Visitation Set For Firefighter Corey Ankum
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Visitation is set for Wednesday for fallen Chicago firefighter Corey Ankum, one of two firefighters killed when a roof and wall collapsed at the scene of a fire last week.
The visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Apostolic Church of God, at 6320 S. Dorchester Ave. Ankum's funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Ankum, 34, and fellow firefighter Edward Stringer, 47, were killed during a fire at the vacant Banner Laundromat and Dry Cleaners, 1744 E. 75th St. The fire was largely out, but firefighters were searching the building for homeless people.
Fire officials later concluded that someone lit garbage, wood or other flammables on fire inside the building, and the fire went on to ignite the structure. The abandoned Laundromat was used by the homeless as a makeshift shelter.
On Tuesday, more than 1,000 people turned out for Stringer's funeral at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 S. Western Ave. Mayor Richard M. Daley and Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff both spoke, and uniformed firefighters from across the United States and Canada were in attendance.
