VIDEO: Crews Detonate Torrence Avenue Bridge For Demolition
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Crews set off an explosion to bring the Torrence Avenue Bridge crashing down into the Grand Calumet River on Thursday.
The Illinois Department of Transportation imploded the bridge's supports, sending it into the river below, so crews could begin dismantling it.
The bride, located about a mile south of 130th Street on the Far South Side, has been closed for nearly 10 months, after inspectors found structural problems that left it unsafe for use.
The state plans to build a new bridge, which should be ready by summer 2017.
Traffic has been detoured to nearby Sibley Boulevard while the bridge remains closed.
