Video: Astros Rookie Gets First Hit, Wanders Off Base, Gets Tagged Out
(CBS) Welcome to life with the Astros, Max Stassi.
The 22-year-old catcher got his first big-league call up Tuesday afternoon because of an injury to Carlos Corporan and was immediately inserted into the Astros lineup.
And in true Astros fashion, Stassi made hysterical waves in his debut after striking out in his first at-bat.
Leading off the fifth, he hit a single, earning his first Major League hit. But after Stassi slid into second safely thanks to a throwing error from pitcher Jason Frasor, the rookie casually stepped off the bag.
Rangers veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler saw Strassi stray from the base and quickly tagged him out.
"I slid in and lost track of the ball," Stassi said after the game. "I thought (Andrus) was on second, and the ball went past him. That's totally on me, and it's something that'll never happen again in my career. It just so happened on my debut.
"It didn't feel too good, especially in a close ballgame."
