In New Ad, Viagra Recruits Women to Help Sell the Little Blue Pill
by Wendy Widom
CHICAGO (CBS) – Viagra recently released a new ad featuring a beautiful woman drifting aimlessly along a sandy beach. Aimless, obviously, because the man in her life is struggling with erectile dysfunction. It's the first time Viagra has launched an ad that appears to target women.
"It's just you and your honey. The setting is perfect. But then, erectile dysfunction happens again. You know what, plenty of guys have this issue, not just getting an erection, but keeping one," she says sympathetically, in a soft and lovely British accent. Guys, don't you feel better already?
The pitch is perfect, except for small simple detail: Most women I know are not wishing their partners would take a little blue pill to perform better sexually. Women I know, especially those in the throes of marriage and motherhood, are feeling too tired, stressed out and overwhelmed for Viagra-esque lovemaking. If you filmed most of my buddies on a beach like the one in the Viagra ad, they'd be asking for another margarita and a hot dog, the kind you put condiments on.
Newsflash fellas: we like you just the way you are. You don't need to look like Channing Tatum or have sex like a porn star for us to think you're sexy and manly. Rather than take the little blue pill, take us to a nice dinner. Tell us you love us and think we are beautiful, even as the muffin tops spill over our fraying, 10-year-old pajama bottoms. I promise, the results will be just as good.
