Vandals Cause Extensive Damage At Wheeler High School
WHEELER, Ind. (STMW) -- Vandals did extensive – though not permanent – damage to Wheeler High School near Valparaiso around midnight Sunday, closing the high school for the day and causing a two-hour delay at Union Township Middle School, which is in a connecting building.
Union Township School Corporation Supt. John Hunter said Monday morning cleanup of the damage took longer than could be accomplished before the start of the school day at the high school.
"Primarily it was just the high school that was vandalized. We found a few things at the middle school, but nothing major," he said. Damage included toilet paper and silly string strewn all over the place; furniture displaced and upside down, including in the library; books knocked off the shelves in the library; feces spread on a wall; doors taped and tied shut; honey in the locks of student lockers; and school buses unplugged.
The school corporation does not yet have a cost estimate for the damages, but is working with the Porter County Sheriff's Department on the matter.
"According to our surveillance camera, it appeared about midnight last evening [Sunday]. It does appear to be students," he said.
The number and identity of the students is undetermined, and they could face disciplinary measures from the school corporation and/or criminal charges.
Though the school has faced vandalism in the past, Hunter said it has not been anything to this degree.
