Valpo Hires Ex-Illini Powell As Assistant Coach
CHICAGO (CBS) Valparaiso has hired former Illini power forward Roger Powell Jr. as an assistant coach, the school announced Monday.
"Roger will be a fantastic addition to our staff," head coach Bryce Drew said in a statement. "He brings a tremendous basketball resume with him, along with the same character and values that our university and program represent. We are excited to get him here and then on the road recruiting, where he should be a great asset for us."
Powell was a key member of Illinois' 2004-05 Final Four team that lost to North Carolina in the National Championship Game. He briefly played with the Utah Jazz after graduating from Illinois but has spent most of his professional basketball career bouncing around the NBDL and Europe. He also participated in Bulls' training camp in 2008 and 2010.
"I am extremely excited about this opportunity to start my college coaching career at Valparaiso University," Powell said. "The Drew family has built a successful and competitive program that prizes integrity and character. I am truly blessed to join the Valpo family."
