Chicago Public Schools Closed Friday For Vaccine Awareness Day
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Chicago Public Schools are closed Friday for Vaccination Awareness Day.
CPS is encouraging students and families to use the time off to get a vaccine if they haven't already.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot got her COVID-19 booster shot Friday. The mayor and city leaders will meet at Michele Clark High School to update Chicago's vaccination efforts.
"Many children and families will receive life-saving vaccines today," Lightfoot said. "We know that there is still work to do, be we are encouraged by the uptick in the number of parents who have seen the importance of making sure that their children get vaccinated."
"We are on the increase with COVID-19 cases here in Chicago," Dr. Alison Arwady said. "We are as of today averaging 414 new cases of COVID every day in the city of Chicago. That puts us back into a higher risk status."
She says she expects cases to increase as she pushed for vaccines.
City employees will also get two hours paid leave to get a shot.
The Chicago Teachers Union is holding a vaccination event for anyone ages five and up.
Anyone interested should register online at ctulocal1.org. Those who register can then receive their vaccination at the CTU center at 1901 West Carroll.
The event starts at noon and goes until 3 p.m.
