University Of Chicago Doctor Killed By Car While Jogging
A University of Chicago medical professor was killed Wednesday morning, when he was struck by a car while jogging near Jackson Park.
Police said a man was hit by a vehicle around 6:40 a.m. near 67th Street and Bennett Avenue, at the southern end of the Jackson Park Golf Course, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Relatives confirmed the victim was 74-year-old Gary Toback, a kidney disease specialist and professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We have lost an institutional leader who represented the University of Chicago's values and aspirations. Dr. Gary Toback was a professor in the Department of Medicine who joined our faculty in 1974, served as interim nephrology chief from 2009 to 2015, and conducted world-renowned research on renal growth factors. He was a treasured colleague, friend, mentor, leader and physician," University of Chicago Medicine spokeswoman Lorna Wong said in an email.

The driver was not injured, but her 2-year-old daughter – who was in the back seat – was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
