United Flight Slides Off Runway At O'Hare Airport

CHICAGO (CBS) -- For the second time in a month, a United Airlines flight arriving from San Francisco slid off a runway at O'Hare airport on Friday.

The FAA and the airline confirmed Flight 734 rolled off the end of the runway after landing at O'Hare shortly before noon.

The Boeing 737 ended up partly off of runway 9L at the north end of the airport.

The engines were still running as emergency crews arrived on the scene, witnesses told CBS 2.

There were 179 passengers and 6 crew on board. No injuries were reported. Buses were brought in to take passengers to their gate.

The White family was returning from a trip to Hawaii and said the landing seemed uneventful.

"Until the pilot came on and said we slid the runway, we didn't know," said Lisa White.

Todd White agreed, saying, "It felt like there were a couple little bumps other wise didn't realize."

On Dec. 30 another United flight slid off the same runway, landing from the opposite direction.

In that incident, United Flight 1977 from Seattle slid off the end of Runway 27R into an overrun area after missing a turn to begin taxiing to the terminal. The airline said the plane never left the pavement, and stopped within an overrun area.
