Union Station Madison Street Entrance Closed For Repairs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two days after a woman was hit in the head by falling debris at Union Station, Metra officials said the Madison Street entrance to the station has been closed until further notice.
Metra said the Madison Street entrance at Union Station was being closed for repairs and inspections. Metra passengers should use the Adams, Jackson, Canal, or Clinton entrance instead.
In addition, tracks 5, 7 and 9 on the north concourse were closed, Metra said.
Tuesday afternoon, Hilda Piell was exiting a Metra train on Track 9 at Union Station when several ponds of concrete fell from the ceiling and hit her in the head, fracturing her skull.
"All of the sudden I felt something very sharp and heavy hit my head," Piell said. "I touched the top of my head and realized there was blood gushing from my head."
Tracks 9, 11 and 13 were shut down Tuesday and Wednesday in response to the incident. Thursday afternoon, Metra said track 9 remained out of service, and tracks 5 and 7 also were closed at least through the evening.
"I want the people responsible for maintaining Union Station, to make sure nothing like this ever happens again," she said.
