UIC Settles Malpractice Suit For $16.2M
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Melrose Park man has settled his medical malpractice lawsuit against the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center for $16.2 million.
George Nissen's lawsuit alleged that two nurses at UIC Medical Center didn't properly monitor his condition while he was being treated there for a stroke in 2005, leading to brain damage.
His attorneys claimed that Nissen's doctors weren't notified for hours that the pressure inside his skull was elevated.
Nissen, 47, is now a quadriplegic. His lawyers said he can't eat or speak and communicates only through eye movements.
The university's board of trustees approved the settlement on Thursday, although the deal still requires court approval.
A nursing agency will pay an additional $1.5 million.
