A man jumped out of a passing sport-utility vehicle as the woman waited on the sidewalk, and demanded her purse. He knocked her to the ground, then got back in his SUV and fled north on Loomis Street, UIC police said.
Police say the student was not injured.
The robber is described as a black man between the ages of 18 and 23, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a black skull cap and driving a white SUV, police said.
Anyone with information should call UIC police at (312) 996-2830.
UIC police reported in November that crime was up around the campus. In the Chicago Police Monroe District, which surrounds the campus, there were 165 robberies and 320 burglaries between January and September, which represented big increases and bucked the citywide trend.
Police advised students to put their cell phones and iPods away and pay attention to their surroundings.
