U.S. Postal Service To Close South Shore Location
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Citing an "extraordinary decline in mail volume," the U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that a South Shore retail location will soon close its doors.
Finance Station N at 2148 E. 71st St. will close on May 13, according to a release from the USPS.
Customers wishing to conduct postal business at a retail office can do so at four nearby locations: 7436 W. Exchange Ave., 7715 S. Cottage Grove Ave., 1510 E. 55th St. or 700 E. 61st St.
The announcement to close Finance Station N is the result of a 2010 study that examined about 3,300 USPS stations and branches across the country to see which could be consolidated, the release said.
No postal employees will be laid and Finance Station N's two employees will be reassigned to other locations.
The U.S. Postal Service has seen a decline of nearly 26 billion pieces of mail in the past year, the release said.
Finance Station N is the only Chicago District retail unit scheduled for closure.
