U Of I To Get $19.5M For Health Care Innovation Project
CHICAGO (AP) -- The University of Illinois has been named a likely recipient of a $19.5 million federal grant for a project focused on the health of 6,000 Chicago-area children.
The grant is among $360 million in prospective innovation awards announced Wednesday by new Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell. The final word on the awards is expected later this summer. Funding comes from the Affordable Care Act.
The U of I project will bring health care into neighborhoods, using nurses with advanced training to lead medical teams.
Dr. Benjamin Van Voorhees of the university's Children's Hospital says the focus will be on children with asthma, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, depression and other complex conditions. Transportation to clinics, after-hours care and computer-based education will be used.
