U Of C Student Body President May Be Expelled After Protest Incident
(CBS) -- Just 24 hours before he's scheduled to graduate, the student body president at the University of Chicago could be expelled.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.
Tyler Kissinger is facing potential expulsion because in May he allowed other protesters access to administrative offices.
"Freedom of expression and dissent are fundamental values of the University of Chicago," the administration says. But "all students are expected to follow the policies set forth in the student manual."
Kissinger says he would do it again.
There isn't much precedent for such discipline, except for decades ago, when the likes of now-presidential candidate Bernie Sanders protested as a student at the U of C.
Sanders re-tweeted a New York Times piece on Kissinger's saga.
Kissinger is the son of a former single-earner household. He would be the first of his family to get a degree. His parents are on their way. His disciplinary hearing is Friday morning. Punishment could be as mild as a warning, Kissinger says.
