U Of C Professor Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
(CBS) -- A prominent University of Chicago professor has resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct. What's more, 43-year-old Jason Lieb has faced this kind of trouble before.
CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez has reaction from the school's Hyde Park campus.
University officials say they first heard about all of this in November. The New York Times reports Lieb made unwelcome sexual advances to several female grad students and had sexual contact with a student too intoxicated to consent.
The university confirms that a faculty member had "engaged in inappropriate behavior during a party ..." and in January concluded that "The faculty members conduct violated the university's policy on harassment discrimination and sexual misconduct."
The faculty member, molecular biologist Jason Lieb, was recommended for termination but resigned before the process was complete.
"I think it's scary especially when there are so many young people," said student Kristin Greenwood. "It's scary but I am pretty confident that the university has taken the right steps."
"At the end of the day, who really knows what's going on," said student Victor Tan. "The only way that I found out about this incident was through social media."
Some students on campus expressed shock that Lieb had been accused before.
The University confirms "the faculty member informed the University about a prior allegation involving unwanted contact that occurred at another institution."
But that other institution didn't find a violation of school policy, so the University of Chicago gave Lieb the benefit of the doubt, although they say they did require him to undergo training about sexual misconduct
