U Of C Professor: NATO Is In Crisis As It Comes To Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- NATO is coming to Chicago for its 25th summit meeting next month, and this week, WBBM Newsradio is looking at why, and why Chicago.

As John Cody reports, University of Chicago political scientist John Mearsheimer says NATO is in crisis, looking at a losing war in Afghanistan, and looking at a U.S. focus away from Europe and toward China. That shift is disturbing to the European community.

"One of the reasons that they're meeting in Chicago is because they want to make NATO appealing to people in the American heartland," Mearsheimer said.

Mearsheimer suggests the summit meeting will end with a statement that the NATO alliance is still viable – a statement that will not alter the fact of a U.S. pivot towards China.

Mearsheimer adds NATO normally attracts protesters, but says they shouldn't hurt the NATO summit unless it's as bad as the 1968 Democratic convention, which Mearsheimer sees as unlikely.
