Woman, Teenage Girl Shot In Harvey

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman and a teenage girl were shot late Wednesday night in south suburban Harvey.

A 23-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl inside an apartment in the 14600 block of South Halsted Street around 10 p.m. Wednesday when they were shot.

"There was a gentleman who approached this particular residence to have a conversation about some suspicious activity he was involved with himself. He left the scene. Minutes later, eight bullets rang out into this particular apartment," Harvey city spokesman Sean Howard said.

The girl was sitting in a chair inside the apartment's living room when a bullet hit her in the head. The woman was shot in the leg, and taken to a local hospital. The girl was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

"We want people to keep her in their prayers. She's suffering from a head wound," Howard said.

Police said the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute over drugs. Officials originally said both victims were 17 years old.

Witnesses said the 23-year-old woman – Roberta Rodgers – never lost consciousness, and was able to talk to investigators. She was undergoing surgery Thursday morning.

Maurice Lewis helped Rodgers as she stumbled out of the apartment after the shooting.

"She came out the door. As soon as I came out the door, she was running, fixing to fall, and then she kept on saying 'help, help.' I grabbed her, and carried her on inside the store, and that's when I called 911," he said.

Howard said one person who was seen fleeing the scene was taken into custody, but police were not describing him as a suspect, but only as a "person of interest."

It was only the second shooting in Harvey this year. Howard said detectives are working around the clock to bring the shooter or shooters to justice.
