At Least Six Killed By Tornadoes: One Near Peoria, Five In Southern Illinois
NEW MINDEN, Ill. (AP/CBS) —At least six people have been killed by tornadoes that struck different regions of Illinois Sunday, including one death reported in the central Illinois town of Washington.
The victim in Washington was a 51-year-old man, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency tells CBS 2.
Meanwhile, two people were killed when a tornado hit their home in rural Southern Illinois. Local coroner Mark Styninger said the elderly man and his sister died Sunday afternoon in their farmhouse in the town of New Minden, about 50 miles southeast of St. Louis.
The storm that struck New Minden was part of a series of intense thunderstorms and tornadoes that swept across the Midwest on Sunday, causing extensive damage in several central Illinois communities.
Another three people were killed in Brookport in Massac County, near the Kentucky border, from a tornado that struck there.
