Two Months Later, Victim's Family Awaits Break In CTA Station Killing
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Since March, investigators have been trying to solve a murder that occurred at a CTA station.
A man who stole an iPhone pushed 68-year-old Sally Katona-King to her death.
Police believe they will find the killer.
Her children sincerely hope so. Kristyn Hartman spoke with them.
"The way she died makes it much more difficult," said Kimberly Katona.
It all began when a man stole someone's iPhone at the Fullerton CTA station. He ran into the rush hour crowd, pushing people out of the way. Then, on the stairs, he encountered Katona King.
"We believe he tried to jump over her, and he knocked her over backwards," Chicago Police Sgt. Debra DeYoung said.
Katona-King did not recover from the fall.
Eileen Katona sighed and asked: "Would he like it if someone did that to his mom?"
"We work for the victim," DeYoung said. "They deserve a say. We also work for the victim's family because they deserve closure."
The sergeant believes they will get it. She says tips from the public are fewer now, but they do keep coming. She's confident one will lead to the man responsible.
Katona-King's daughters know officers are working hard, but they worry.
"It's like looking for a needle in a haystack." Kimberly Katona said. "Chicago's a big city."
Still, they hope for resolution.
"It's not going to bring my mom back, but it will help knowing this person isn't out there," Katona said.
Police have video of the subject running from the scene, but it's just a blur. They're calling on the man to turn himself in.
Asked if it's possible he doesn't realize Katona-King fell and died, DeYoung said that's not likely -- especially with the attention the case has gotten.
