Brothers Slain In West Pullman After Leaving Family Gathering

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two brothers were found shot and killed inside a car in the West Pullman neighborhood early Tuesday.
CBS 2's Susanna Song reports 38-year-old Leandre Cooper and 35-year-old Demetrius Cooper were found in a late model Dodge Charger, parked in the 100 block of East 120th Street, around the corner from their mother's house, just hours after leaving a family gathering.
Their bodies were found around 3 a.m. They had been shot in the head and neck.
Both men were fathers. Demetrius had a 15-year-old daughter, and Leandre was married with four children.
Their mother, Bobbie Cooper, said the men had been at a regular family gathering Monday night, and left around midnight.
All morning long, their relatives and friends gathered at their mother's house, to comfort each other. They said the car in which the two men were found belonged to Demetrius' girlfriend.
"We're trying to stop the violence around here. It is so crazy," neighbor Brenda Hughes said. "Let's just work together. Let's stop all the craziness out here. And I hope someone listens this time."
Bobbie Cooper said her sons took care of her, after she suffered two strokes in the past five years, leaving her wheelchair-bound. Her sons often came by to help her around the house.
"They were close and loving young men, who were here for me," Bobbie Cooper said. "All I can say is why? They never hurt nobody. … They were my everything."
Police said neither brother was known to have gang ties.
"We're still trying to determine a motive at this point. It's early in the investigation," Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Detectives were looking into whether or not surveillance cameras in the area might have captured a suspect, or a suspicious vehicle in the area.
