Two Killed In Crash On I-65 Near Crown Point
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were killed Thursday night when a minivan and a car collided on Interstate 65 near Crown Point.
Police said, around 9:40 p.m., a 2000 Ford Windstar was heading north on I-65 when the driver tried to pass a 2002 Chevy Cavalier on the right. As the Windstar accelerated, the driver lost control, and the minivan fishtailed into the left lane, sideswiping the Cavalier.
The Cavalier went off the road and began to roll. It hit a median barrier, and came to rest upright on the inner shoulder.
The Windstar also went off the road, knocking over a median barrier, and hitting a guard rail on the other side of the grassy median.
The two people inside the Cavalier were thrown from the car as it rolled, and were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
The Lake County Coroner's Office identified the victims as 29-year-old Terry Halcomb Jr. and 27-year-old James Evans, both of Ohio. Both suffered blunt force trauma.
A 19-year-old Chicago woman who was driving the Windstar was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point to be treated for minor injuries.
Police said they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
No charges or traffic citations had been filed as of early Friday.
