CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was charged with aggravated assault after an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot a person who allegedly pointed a gun at him early Sunday in the River North neighborhood.
Mirza Grosic, 30, of the 9100 block of W. Terrace Drive in Niles was charged with two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault with a gun, according to a police News Affairs statement.
The suspect pointed a weapon at the off-duty officer about 4 a.m. while outside a business establishment in the 300 block of West Erie Street, the statement said. Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Eric Mullenback said the officer fired their weapon.
The off-duty officer shot and struck the suspect, according to the statement. The suspect fled in a vehicle.
Two people were taken into custody less than 10 minutes later near the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) and West Lawrence Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.
The suspect who was shot was taken to an area hospital and a weapon was recovered at the scene, the statement said.
No one else was injured, the statement said.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the off-duty officer saw a fight in an alley and went to investigate. Two people got into a car and the passenger pointed a gun at the officer as it drove past.
The officer shot the passenger in the hand the vehicle drove away, Camden said. Responding officers broadcast a description of the vehicle, which was found with a weapon inside on the Northwest Side.
The passenger was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand. The officer was not injured.
Grosic is scheduled to appear in Branch 29-2 court on Jan. 10, 2012.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, and Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
