Two armed robberies reported 15 minutes apart on Chicago's Southwest Side
CHICAGO (CBS) — Two dramatic robberies took place just 15 minutes apart Thursday morning with an exchange of gunfire in one case as Chicago police are investigating two armed robberies on Chicago's Southwest Side.
A mother and her son were sitting in a car when they were robbed and then forced into their own home and held at gunpoint, and that's when a family member heard yelling and decided to step in with his gun.
"When you have a gun to somebody you love, you don't think twice," said Sebastian Segura.
Segura had no second thoughts when he saw suspects pointing a gun at his sister and nephew. He said his 56-year-old sister was heading to work around 1:30 this morning like she typically does. Her 20-year-old son was giving her a ride.
They were still in the car in front of their home when two gunmen approached them.
Police said it happened in the 6200 block of South Kolin. The suspects were armed and demanded their property. They took their belongings and then forced them into the house, where Segura was sleeping, until he heard yelling.
Then, the suspects demanded money from everyone in the house. Segura called it a hostage situation. He said the gunmen told him and his brother to go away. He did but came back with his gun and said he had a concealed carry license.
"I tell her to get down, duck. Get out of the way. They shot once. I shot right back. They shot again and just kept exchanging fires," Segura said.
And just 15 minutes later and two miles away, the same pattern. Police said in the 3300 block of West 59th Place, a 17-year-old male was inside a vehicle when a black SUV approached.
Two armed suspects got out, demanded property, and forced the victim into the house, where they took more items and left the scene.
Even with the similar pattern in both armed robberies, Chicago police still haven't said if they are connected. No one was harmed in either incident.
