Two Found Dead After SWAT Standoff In West Town
CHICAGO (CBS) – A lengthy SWAT standoff in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood ended Tuesday night with two people dead.
A SWAT team responded Tuesday to a barricade situation in West Town. The standoff lasted more than five hours, CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports.
The incident started with police responding to a call around 5 p.m. to the 800 block of North Wolcott to a report of shots fired. Their attention was immediately focused on the first floor of the four-story building, where police said a man and woman were involved in a domestic disturbance.
A person in the home refused to come out of the apartment, resulting in SWAT to be called to the scene.
Five hours into the standoff, SWAT entered the building at about 10 p.m. finding a man and woman dead from gunshot wounds.
Loretta A. Purcell, 84, and Christopher Kelly Purcell, 58, were identified as the victims, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. They were both pronounced dead at the scene at 9:58 p.m. and lived on the same block as the incident.
A CBS 2 viewer, who lives in the area, said the victims are a mother and son. The source said it was likely a murder-suicide. Police have not confirmed that information. Additional details were not available.
Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
