Two Dead, Two Critically Hurt In I-88 Crash
LISLE, Ill. (STMW) -- A motorist driving in the wrong direction on the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway caused a four-vehicle accident Saturday evening that killed two people and left two others critically injured in west suburban Lisle.
The driver of a 2006 Porsche convertible was traveling east in the westbound center lane of the Reagan Memorial Highway (I-88) when the car collided head-on with a 2004 Toyota Corolla just west of the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355), Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. David Schneider said.
The Corolla struck the wall of the left median, then the Porsche then struck a 2001 Ford Windstar mini van, Schneider said. A 2012 Mazda station wagon struck the debris from the crash.
The driver of the Porsche, a 43-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Schneider said.
Two passengers in the Corolla died, Schneider said. A 37-year-old Elmhurst woman was pronounced dead on the scene. A 73-year-old Elmhurst man was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where he was pronounced dead.
The DuPage County Coroner's office identified the woman as Farzana Ali, of the 900 block of Virgina Lane, and the man as Sherali Shalwani, of the same address. Autopsies are scheduled for later Sunday.
The driver of the Corolla, a 42-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to Edward Hospital.
There were no other injuries.
It is not immediately known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
State Police and the coroner's office are investigating.
