Two Dead In South Lawndale Shooting
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men are dead after a gang-related shooting Sunday afternoon in the South Lawndale neighborhood.
About 1 p.m., an orange Hummer blocked a Lincoln Navigator head-on at the corner of West 28th Street and South Sawyer Avenue, police at the scene said. Two people with guns then stepped out of the Hummer and fired nearly a dozen bullets at the Navigator.
A 13-year-old boy who lives near the scene said he saw part of the shooting happen from inside his home. Both people in the Hummer had white masks on, he said, and after the shooting, someone drove the vehicle south on Sawyer Avenue. Police said the Hummer had not been located as of 3:15 p.m.
The Navigator drove off and was later found at the corner of 24th Street and Kedzie Avenue, police at the scene said.
A 32-year-old man — identified as Juan Ocon — in the Navigator suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:26 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. A second man, 19-year-old Timmy Bermudez, was shot in the chest and was pronounced at Mount Sinai Hospital less than 20 minutes later.
Police said they were still unsure if more than two people were shot.
The shooting occurred beneath a police security camera, and detectives will be viewing tape to identify the potential shooters, police said.
No suspects are in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
