CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Chicago police officers who were shot Sunday morning have been released from the hospital. They were seen leaving via police escort with several officers standing at attention, just a few hours after the incident.
The shooting happened in the 1500 block of South Lawndale about 7:19 a.m. as officers responded to an alert of shots fired. As they arrived, they saw an armed suspect in an alley who began shooting, police Supt. David Brown said at a news conference. The suspect was shot in the leg, police said.
"As they approached this person, the offender turned and immediately began firing a gun at our officers striking one of our officers in the hand and a second officer in the leg and shoulder above his vest," Brown said.
Brown said that there was no foot pursuit by the officers, who were in uniform when the suspect, who police say is 45-years-old and a convicted felon, began shooting.
One officer was shot in the hand and the other in the hip and shoulder, Brown said. The officers were sent to Mt. Sinai Hospital for treatment.
Both officers were stabilized at the hospital. The suspect's condition was not known but was stabilized at Stroger, police said.
Brown said both male officers have been on the force since 2017 Police spokesman Tom Ahern said the suspect's gun was found at the scene.
A total of 29 CPD officers have been shot at so far in 2021, police said. In last 15 months, 108 officers have been shot at.
A total of 6 CPD officers have been hit by gunfire so far in 2021.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability will be conducting an investigation into the shooting and the officers will be placed on 30 day administrative duty, which is standard policy after a police shooting.
"Let's say a prayer for all involved, let's pray for peace in our city," said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. "We've gotta put these guns down."
