Two Charged In Albany Park Robbery
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Bond was set at $900,000 each for two men charged in connection with an armed robbery where a woman was wounded and a Chicago Police officer was bitten by a dog early Saturday in the North Side Albany Park neighborhood.
Davontae Little, 18, of the 6600 block of South Wood Street, was charged with one count of armed robbery with discharge of a firearm causing bodily harm, four counts of aggravated assault to an officer using a firearm, three counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, all felonies.
David Ruiz, 20, of the 8800 block of South Escanaba Avenue, was charged with one count of armed robbery with discharge of a firearm causing bodily harm, three counts of armed robbery with a firearm, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm, all felonies.
A third female suspect was released without charges, Mirabelli said.
The three of them were in a dark SUV when they approached four people in the 4500 block of North Christiana Avenue about 3:45 a.m. Saturday and robbed them at gunpoint, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
The cell phone of an 18-year-old man was stolen before gunshots rang out, Mirabelli said.
A 19-year-old woman was shot in the calf and suffered a graze wound to the neck, Mirabelli said. She was hospitalized at Swedish Covenant Hospital.
The man and two 16-year-old girls were uninjured, Mirabelli said.
Albany Park District and canine unit police officers canvassing the area spotted a vehicle in the 5300 block of North Kimball Avenue that matched the description of the SUV wanted in the robbery, Mirabelli said.
Two of the suspects in the vehicle were arrested, Mirabelli said. A third suspect fled the scene and a foot chase ensued.
He was later taken into custody in the 5400 block of North Spaulding Avenue, Mirabelli said. According to Fraternal Order of police spokesman Pat Camden, the armed suspect was found hiding in a backyard.
Before the arrest, the suspect fired at police with a handgun, and officers returned fire, Mirabelli said. The suspect was shot in the arm and taken in "stable" condition to Swedish Covenant Hospital.
A responding female canine unit officer was bitten by a police dog but not her own canine and taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital with non life threatening injuries, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Little and Ruiz are next scheduled to appear in Br. 50 court on Sept. 6.
