Tuition Hike Coming At U Of I
URBANA, Ill. (CBS) -- Tuition at the University of Illinois is expected to go up for the next school year, despite a new policy to limit increases.
Trustees are expected to raise tuition, but those same trustees created limits on tuition increases back in January.
They made the policy to keep tuition down in relation to inflation and other factors -- with increases as low as 2 percent. But they also said given that the state already owes the university more than $430 million, folllowing the policy might prove impossible.

This came after a 9.5 percent increase in tuition at the university for the present school year. Tuition for the U of I flagship campus in Urbana-Champaign is now almost $14,000 a year.
Tuition also went up last year at the U of I Chicago and Springfield campuses.
Only new students are affected by the tuition hikes, because Illinois guarantees students at public universities the same tuition for four years.
